ImageIf your thumb is turning green along with the countryside, it’s telling you that now is the time to get out the gardening equipment.  Last year was not all that great for most of us who must have our home grown heirloom tomatoes.     All of my plants produced some good fruit in spite of the unusually wet spring, and cool summer.

I’ve taken a survey of my favorite places for tomato starts, Common Ground in Palo Alto, and Sunnyside Nursury in Mt. View.  They both have the best selection of heirloom tomato starts, so I went shopping, and took some notes.

stupice tomato photoAfter all was said and done, last year’s winner was Stupice.   This potato leafed variety was the first and last to produce here, which is quite a feat.  She has smaller sized red-orange fruit, about the size of golf balls, with a green cap.  Stupice produces slowly but continuously and tolerates diseases well.  The flavor is a bit tart, rather mild compared to all other heirloom tomatoes.  For an early variety, it’s a great choice, but also would be a perfect choice if you only have space for a single plant.

This year, I have some extra starts from my own garden to offer.   If you would like to try some of these, contact me for details and arrangements.  There are about 10 of each kind that need to be transplanted soon.  If you have anything to trade, that would be great.

Common Ground in Palo Alto is always my preferred place to buy tomato starts.  If you have the chance, take a minute to check out their store near Page Mill Road off of El Camino.

SummerwinOf particular interest is the large selection of bulk seeds and organic soil nutrients.  I can think of no other gardening and landscaping organization more worthy of support.
