I’ve taken a survey of my favorite places for tomato starts, Common Ground in Palo Alto, and Sunnyside Nursury in Mt. View.  They both have the best selection of heirloom tomato starts, so I went shopping, and took some notes. 

After all was said and done, last year’s winner was Stupice.   This potato leafed variety was the first and last to produce here, which is quite a feat.  She has smaller sized red-orange fruit, about the size of golf balls, with a green cap.  Stupice produces slowly but continuously and tolerates diseases well.  The flavor is a bit tart, rather mild compared to all other heirloom tomatoes.  For an early variety, it’s a great choice, but also would be a perfect choice if you only have space for a single plant.
