Having purchased a high definition television (HDTV) recently, I’ve got to tell you about how happy I am with it. I know, it’s still somewhat pricey, and you’re probably thinking TV is not something to spend a lot of money or time with. Well, I have news for you. It’s not that expensive anymore. And the added enjoyment from the dramatically improved picture and sound can not be conveyed into words. If you like public television (PBS), did you know that our PBS station in San Francisco broadcasts five digital channels in addition to the single analog station you currently enjoy? That’s right, five additional separate channels, so there’s much more to see and learn about for the whole family. All the major channels have at least one digital channel to watch instead of the old crappy analog signal you are used to. To see what is available to watch in your area, set your web browser to TitanTV.com Despite what Comcast has been saying recently in their current advertising and propaganda campaign, HDTV is available over the air using a modest antenna. You don’t need cable TV for HDTV. Any decent outdoor antenna will work will work within about 50 miles from the broadcast location. If you already get a good picture with analog, you should have no problem. Perhaps the most important thing about HDTV is that it’s digital. If you have a decent signal, you will get a picture far superior to the analog equivalent. Not all digital signals and TVs are actually HDTV. By definition, the digital signal must have at least 720 lines or rows of picture to be classified as HDTV. Watch out for sneaky marketing regarding this important fact. If a TV’s native resolution does not have at least 720 lines, it simply does not qualify. Be careful, because some products with less than 720 lines are being marketed as HDTV. Lots of projectors out there, for instance, only have 600 lines. Look in the specs for the native resolution. If it’s not at least 1280x720, don’t buy it. Note that the second number denotes the vertical resolution which must be at least 720. Need more to get excited about HDTV? The sound quality is superb. Some channels are even broadcast in Dolby Digital 5.1. Those with a good surround sound home theater will appreciate the improvement over the MTS stereo they are used to. For those with a home theater, the new digital HDTV experience blows DVDs away. Pictures are more detailed and motion is smoother. Channels with Dolby Digital are delightful. |
